A year marked by the surprising success of original films is now facing a major test, as a sparse fall release slate threatens to slow the box office momentum. Zack Cregger’s Weapons, starring Julia Garner and Josh Brolin, became a breakout hit with $148.8 million in global ticket sales, proving that audiences are hungry for new ideas.
The 2025 box office has been full of pleasant surprises. Jurassic World Rebirth trampled expectations with an $828 million haul, and horror originals like Sinners carved out their own success stories. An industry insider noted that these films show people will show up when they are given “something fresh and exciting,” a lesson studios are taking to heart.
Despite these victories, the upcoming calendar looks bleak. Late August and September are devoid of guaranteed blockbusters. Theaters will instead rely on a collection of smaller, riskier films like Ethan Coen’s Honey Don’t! and the satire The Rose. Even with the arrival of The Conjuring: Last Rites, the period is expected to be one of the slowest of the year.
The industry’s next major bet isn’t until October 10 with Disney’s Tron: Ares. That film is expected to usher in a busy and profitable holiday season featuring Zootopia 2, Predator: Badlands, and Wicked: For Good. Analysts are confident that theaters have recovered enough financially to sustain through this short-term slowdown.
