A 20-point peace plan crafted by Donald Trump has achieved what months of conflict could not: bringing Hamas to the negotiating table. The Palestinian group announced on Saturday its acceptance of the plan’s core components, including an immediate ceasefire, the release of all Israeli hostages, and the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza.
The plan, which Israel had already accepted, was presented to Hamas with a non-negotiable Sunday deadline from Trump. His threat of “all hell” breaking loose appears to have been the catalyst for Hamas’s decision. The group’s statement confirmed it is ready for immediate talks, mediated by third parties, to work through the logistics of the comprehensive agreement.
A key pillar of the 20-point plan is the disarmament of Hamas and the establishment of a new government in the Palestinian territories. Hamas has now agreed to a major part of this vision, consenting to hand over the administration of Gaza to an independent, technocratic body. This new government would be formed with broad Palestinian, Arab, and Islamic support.
Despite this progress, the agreement is not yet finalized. Hamas has stated that while it accepts the immediate terms, other elements of the plan concerning the future of Gaza and Palestinian rights require further internal dialogue. This suggests a two-phased approach: an immediate end to the crisis, followed by longer-term political negotiations.
Upon Hamas’s acceptance, Trump moved to solidify the deal by calling on Israel to immediately stop its bombing campaign. He framed this as a crucial step to facilitate the safe release of the hostages. With both sides having now accepted the foundational terms, the world watches to see if this detailed roadmap can finally bring lasting peace to the region.
