Trump Re-Engages: Claims He Can End “Complicated” Nile Argument

Donald Trump claims he can end the “complicated” argument over the Nile River. The former President has reached out to Egypt with an offer to resume U.S. mediation regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, a project that has caused significant tension with Ethiopia.
Trump’s proposal focuses on U.S. oversight. He believes that with “strong United States role in monitoring,” a deal can be reached. The plan would allow Ethiopia to use the dam for power generation while guaranteeing “predictable water releases” to Egypt, addressing the core security concerns of the region.
The dispute is multifaceted, involving issues of sovereignty and survival. The dam has officially opened, changing the reality on the ground. However, Egypt continues to view it as a threat to its water supply. Previous diplomatic efforts, including those by the Biden administration, have failed to produce a permanent solution.
Trump has often boasted about his handling of this file, claiming he “ended” the dispute during his term. Despite these claims, the fundamental disagreements remain. His recent description of the dam as a “big problem” indicates he is aware that the work is unfinished.
By offering to coordinate negotiations, Trump is seeking to reassert American influence in East Africa. His focus on “fair and transparent” talks suggests he wants to move past the accusations of bias that derailed previous attempts, hoping to secure a legacy as a peacemaker.
