Zelensky’s Dual Strategy: Praising Trump’s Diplomacy While Pleading for Arms

President Volodymyr Zelensky is employing a dual-track strategy in his quest to end the war, simultaneously praising President Donald Trump’s diplomatic achievements in Gaza while issuing desperate pleas for military aid to fend off Russian attacks. This approach was on full display Tuesday as he called for an end to the war in Europe.
Zelensky skillfully leveraged the Gaza peace plan, congratulating Trump on the “outstanding achievement” and suggesting it serves as a model. “If a war can be stopped in one region, then surely other wars can be stopped as well,” he argued, implicitly challenging the US to prove its peacemaking capabilities once more in Ukraine.
His diplomatic efforts are methodical. The Ukrainian President is not only engaging Washington but also shoring up support with regional partners. He pointed to a detailed conversation with Finland’s President Alex Stubb as part of a broader effort to coordinate positions and present a unified European call for action.
This diplomatic maneuvering is set against a grim background of escalating Russian violence. Zelensky did not mince words, describing Russia’s “aerial terror” and detailing a recent attack on a Kharkiv hospital that wounded 57 people. He listed damage to energy facilities in Sumy and Kirovohrad, painting a picture of a nation under siege.
The plea for weapons is the other, crucial part of his strategy. Zelensky’s specific request for air defense systems like the Patriot is not just a defensive ask; it’s a strategic move to create what he calls “peace through strength.” He believes only a militarily resilient Ukraine can compel Russia to negotiate in good faith.
