Thailand Urges Cambodia to Keep Border Dispute Private, Avoid Global Involvement

Thailand has cautioned that the progress in mending ties with Cambodia could be jeopardized if border disputes continue to surface in international arenas. This comes after Thailand’s Foreign Minister, Sihasak Phuangketkeow, expressed concerns that persistent allegations against Thailand at global forums might hinder the trust-building initiatives shared by the two nations.

The warning was a response to remarks made by Cambodia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Keo Chhea, during a UN Security Council session. The ambassador highlighted the humanitarian impacts resulting from past border conflicts between Thailand and Cambodia. He pointed out that previous disputes led to significant civilian displacement, extensive damage to homes and infrastructure, and harm to the Preah Vihear Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Thailand criticized these statements from Cambodia, labeling them as biased and claiming they contradicted the spirit of a reconciliation agreement both countries signed in late 2025. This agreement was intended to foster reconciliation and rebuild confidence between the neighboring states.

Cambodia, on its part, reiterated its commitment to resolving the border issues through peaceful dialogue, adherence to international law, and respect for existing ceasefire agreements. Cambodian government spokesperson Pen Bona emphasized the country’s dedication to these peaceful solutions.

The long-standing border tensions, particularly around the area near the Preah Vihear Temple, have intermittently strained the bilateral relations between Thailand and Cambodia. These disputes continue to be a sensitive issue, impacting diplomatic engagements and efforts towards lasting peace in the region.
