Vietnam and Laos have reaffirmed their commitment to boost cooperation across various sectors, including investment, trade, infrastructure, energy, and human resource development, as part of their 2026 cooperation plan. During a mid-year meeting held in Da Nang, officials from both nations evaluated the progress achieved in the first eight months of the year and established priorities for the latter part of 2026.
The economic partnership between the two countries continues to flourish, with Vietnamese enterprises launching 20 new investment projects in Laos, valued at $638.3 million, within the first seven months of the year. Laos retains its status as Vietnam’s largest overseas investment hub, hosting approximately 300 Vietnamese-backed projects with a total investment surpassing $7 billion. Additionally, bilateral trade between the two nations reached around $1.3 billion during the first half of 2026, highlighting the robust economic ties.
In addition to economic collaboration, both countries are making strides in energy, transportation, construction, and infrastructure connectivity. Education and human resource development are also prioritized, with Vietnam allocating 1,300 scholarships for Lao students and providing $43 million in aid to Laos in 2026 as part of a broader assistance program spanning from 2026 to 2030.
To ensure the continued success of their partnership, Vietnam and Laos have agreed to enhance coordination on major projects and tackle investment challenges. They aim to strengthen economic linkages not only bilaterally but also across the broader Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia region, thereby fostering greater regional cooperation and development.
