Singapore and Thailand Boost Relations Before ASEAN Leadership Rotations

In a concerted effort to bolster their bilateral and regional ties, Singapore and Thailand have committed to enhancing cooperation as they prepare for their respective ASEAN chairmanships — Singapore in 2027 and Thailand in 2028. The pledge was made during the fifth Singapore-Thailand Leaders’ Retreat held in Bangkok on September 2, where Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul met for the first time at such a high-level meeting in over a decade. The two leaders emphasized the strength of their countries’ relations and agreed to establish a multi-year agenda to ensure continuity between their successive ASEAN leadership roles.

Key areas of cooperation identified include artificial intelligence, digital and green economies, energy resilience, food security, and connectivity. Defense, security, and efforts to combat transnational crime were also highlighted as priority sectors for collaboration. Both nations reiterated their commitment to a rules-based international order and underscored the importance of stronger ASEAN regional integration. Energy cooperation was a significant focus, with both leaders expressing support for the ASEAN Power Grid and the Laos-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project. This initiative facilitates the import of renewable hydropower from Laos into Singapore via Thailand and Malaysia.

Further solidifying their partnership, the leaders witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding aimed at advancing social sector development. This agreement covers the exchange of knowledge and research on social welfare policies and fosters cooperation between relevant institutions in both countries. The move signifies a commitment to sharing expertise and resources to improve social welfare outcomes.

Economic relations between Singapore and Thailand are robust, with bilateral trade reaching approximately US$52.4 billion in 2025. Singapore has remained Thailand’s largest source of foreign direct investment for three consecutive years, underscoring the depth of economic ties between the two nations. This economic partnership is expected to continue flourishing as both countries work together on their shared agenda for regional growth and stability.
