As the conflict in Ukraine escalates, European leaders are convening in Kyiv to address the country’s urgent air-defense requirements and explore strategies to intensify pressure on Russia. The Coalition of the Willing, an initiative spearheaded by Britain, France, and Germany, is coordinating this meeting, with additional European leaders joining via remote participation. Among the attendees is EU Council President Antonio Costa, underscoring the significance of these discussions.
Recent Russian missile strikes have increasingly targeted Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, resulting in civilian casualties and significant damage to residential areas. In response to these attacks, Ukraine has consistently called for enhanced support from its allies, specifically in the form of additional air-defense systems and interceptor missiles to safeguard its citizens.
In a bid to bolster Ukraine’s defenses, Britain is anticipated to declare new support measures, while France is set to initiate local production of the long-range SCALP missile. Additionally, France has committed to supplying more interceptor missiles, further enhancing Ukraine’s air-defense capabilities.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed concerns about the decreasing deliveries of Patriot interceptor missiles. Ukraine received 675 of these missiles in 2023, a figure projected to drop to 364 in 2025, with expectations of only 264 in 2026. As winter approaches, Kyiv is seeking a minimum of 300 interceptors to strengthen its defenses.
Ukraine’s reliance on advanced Western air-defense systems is critical in countering Russian ballistic missiles, which are notoriously challenging to intercept. Consequently, European allies are diligently exploring options to increase the supply of these systems while simultaneously maintaining diplomatic pressure on Moscow.
