Vietnam and Japan have committed to enhancing their defence cooperation across several strategic areas, including military training, cybersecurity, and the development of the defence industry. This commitment also extends to United Nations peacekeeping operations and post-war recovery efforts. The agreement was reached during a meeting in Hanoi between Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence, General Phan Van Giang, and General Uchikura Hiroaki, Chief of Staff of Japan’s Self-Defence Forces.
In their discussions, General Giang and General Uchikura explored ways to bolster bilateral defence ties and to more effectively implement existing cooperation agreements. General Giang stressed Vietnam’s dedication to improving consultation and dialogue mechanisms and expanding cooperation among military branches. He also emphasized the importance of collaboration in defence technology, military medicine, and cybersecurity. According to him, defence relations have become a crucial component of the broader Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and Japan.
The Vietnamese minister acknowledged Japan’s support in several areas, including personnel training, defence industry development, technology transfer, and post-war recovery initiatives. He advocated for increased scholarship and training opportunities for Vietnamese defence personnel, particularly in fields such as science, engineering, and technology. Japan’s role as a key economic and strategic partner to Vietnam is well-established, with the two countries sharing strong cooperation in trade, investment, development assistance, and labour exchanges.
General Uchikura reiterated Japan’s commitment to strengthening defence ties with Vietnam, expressing support for expanding cooperation in high-level exchanges, military education, cybersecurity, and healthcare services within the armed forces. He highlighted the importance of these efforts in enhancing mutual trust and regional stability. Both sides agreed to maintain close coordination to further advance long-term strategic cooperation.
