Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong of Singapore and Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei have reinforced their dedication to enhancing bilateral ties during Lee’s visit to Brunei, which coincided with the Sultan’s 80th birthday celebrations. The leaders underscored the significance of future milestones, such as the 50th anniversary of their defense partnership in 2026 and the 60th anniversary of the Currency Interchangeability Agreement in 2027.

In their discussions, the leaders focused on broadening cooperation across various sectors, including energy, food security, and supply chain resilience. They also emphasized the importance of fostering people-to-people exchanges, seeing these as vital for the continued strengthening of relations between the two nations.

Beyond the high-level talks, Minister Lee engaged with Brunei’s Crown Prince and senior ministers to explore initiatives aimed at deepening ties among future leaders and young people. This aspect of the visit highlighted the commitment to nurturing a new generation of leaders in both countries who can continue to build on the strong relationship.

While in Brunei, Minister Lee attended official events celebrating the Sultan’s birthday and took the opportunity to connect with Singapore Armed Forces personnel who are stationed in Brunei for training. Additionally, he visited a Singapore-operated aquaculture farm, demonstrating the practical aspects of Singapore’s ongoing cooperation with Brunei in various fields.
