In a landmark collaboration that has spanned over a decade, Vietnam and France have solidified their partnership in space technology with the VNREDSat-1 satellite program. This initiative, which began with the launch of Vietnam’s first Earth observation satellite on May 7, 2013, has not only surpassed its initial five-year lifespan by remaining operational into 2026 but has also paved the way for future advancements. The program’s success is attributed to comprehensive training received by Vietnamese engineers in both France and Vietnam, allowing them to transition from executing transferred procedures to developing their own solutions for technical challenges.
The VNREDSat-1 program has been instrumental in enhancing Vietnam’s capabilities in satellite technology. It has established an integrated remote-sensing system that efficiently handles imaging requests, satellite control, data reception, and processing. Since 2020, the satellite has been pivotal in supplying nearly 30,000 images that support various sectors including environmental management, disaster monitoring, and socio-economic development. This advancement marks a significant step towards Vietnam’s goal of achieving greater technological self-reliance, as emphasized by Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology President Trần Hồng Thái. He noted the necessity for further development in satellite design, payloads, and other critical areas to bolster domestic expertise.
The partnership took a new turn during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam in May 2025. A declaration of intent was signed between the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies to continue their long-term cooperation in space technology and Earth observation. This agreement reflects a shared commitment to exploring a next-generation Earth observation system and the technological options for a proposed VNREDSat-2 satellite.
Looking forward, the collaboration seeks to enhance Vietnamese participation in mission planning, system design, and data applications. There is a strong emphasis on developing expertise in areas such as control software, remote-sensing image processing, artificial intelligence, and ground systems. By focusing on these areas, Vietnam aims to transition from purchasing satellite systems to co-developing them, ultimately achieving technology mastery. This strategic shift will empower Vietnamese scientists and engineers to design, operate, and develop future satellite technology generations independently.
