Vietnam-Switzerland Partnership Expands with Trade Deal and Technology Initiatives

Vietnam and Switzerland have agreed to enhance their Comprehensive Partnership by focusing on key areas such as trade, investment, scientific research, digital finance, and sustainable development. This decision was made following the official visit of Swiss President Guy Parmelin to Vietnam, marking the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

A significant outcome of the visit was the signing of a Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), which includes Switzerland as a member. This agreement is anticipated to improve market access, support business expansion, and create opportunities for stronger trade and investment once it is implemented.

The leaders from both countries have expressed their commitment to strengthening political dialogue and economic ties. They also aim to increase bilateral trade, which surpassed $1 billion in 2025, and encourage more Swiss investment in Vietnam. Priority sectors identified include green finance, digital technology, infrastructure, sustainable tourism, and workforce development.

Additionally, Vietnam and Switzerland have identified opportunities for joint research and technology transfer in biomedicine, renewable energy, agriculture, and the digital economy. The cooperation between government institutions, universities, and businesses is expected to foster innovation and the commercial application of research.

Recognizing Switzerland’s expertise in education and scientific research, Vietnam plans to bolster educational partnerships and exchanges involving experts, researchers, and students. Both countries reaffirmed their support for sustainable development, free trade, multilateral cooperation, and a rules-based international order.

The leaders expressed confidence that closer collaboration between Vietnam and Switzerland will not only support economic growth but also contribute to regional and global stability.
