Australia claimed victory over Zimbabwe by 59 runs in the opening One Day International (ODI) of their three-match series held in Harare. The match was highlighted by Matt Renshaw’s maiden ODI century, which played a pivotal role in setting a challenging target for the hosts.
After winning the toss, Australia elected to bat first and set a formidable score of 294-8 in their allotted 50 overs. Renshaw anchored the innings with a commanding 109, forming crucial partnerships with teammates Alex Carey and Ollie Peake. Despite Zimbabwe’s Newman Nyamhuri making an impressive impact with the ball, taking 5-62, Australia maintained a strong grip on the game.
Zimbabwe, in response, faced an uphill battle and was eventually bowled out for 235 in 45.1 overs. Although Craig Ervine and Sikandar Raza sparked some hope with a 98-run partnership after early setbacks, their efforts were not enough to steer the team to victory. Ervine contributed 59 runs before being dismissed by Nathan Ellis, while Raza added 57 before falling to Spencer Johnson.
Nathan Ellis proved instrumental in dismantling Zimbabwe’s batting lineup, finishing with remarkable figures of 5-31 from 9.1 overs. His strategic bowling in the latter stages of the innings ensured Australia’s triumph by curbing any momentum from the Zimbabwean side.
The series will continue with the second ODI scheduled for Friday in Harare, followed by the third and final match on Sunday, as Australia seeks to secure a series win.
