In a significant diplomatic development, Thailand and Vietnam have elevated their bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic ties. This upgrade marks a pivotal advancement in their collaboration across political, economic, and technological domains.
During the official visit of Vietnamese President and Communist Party General Secretary Tô Lâm to Thailand, the two nations inked four agreements. These agreements span economic cooperation, science and technology, education, and aviation development, laying a foundation for future growth and cooperation.
The leaders of both countries also adopted a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Action Plan for the years 2026–2031. This plan aims to broaden the scope of their collaboration across numerous sectors, including an enhanced focus on security and defense. A notable aspect of this security cooperation is the joint effort to combat transnational crimes such as online scams and illegal fishing.
Economic coordination emerged as a key area of focus, with both countries aiming to surpass the current bilateral trade figure of approximately $22.1 billion, setting a target of $24 billion in the foreseeable future. There is a shared commitment to fostering private-sector growth and navigating global economic uncertainties. Additionally, technology and innovation have been identified as critical areas for cooperation, with plans to strengthen ties in satellite technology, semiconductors, agricultural biotechnology, and emerging industries.
The two nations agreed to promote supply-chain integration, enhance local economic connectivity, and collaborate on green energy initiatives to bolster regional competitiveness and energy security. President Tô Lâm reiterated Vietnam’s dedication to enhancing relations with Thailand, emphasizing the importance of regional peace, stability, and sustainable development in Southeast Asia.
