Vietnam and Switzerland are set to enhance their longstanding diplomatic relationship by expanding cooperation in various fields, including trade, investment, and technology. The commitment to deepen ties was underscored at an event in Bern celebrating Vietnam’s National Day and the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
Vietnamese National Assembly Vice President Nguyễn Thị Thanh emphasized the importance of the relationship with Switzerland, acknowledging the latter’s support during pivotal moments in Vietnam’s history. Thanh highlighted the ongoing development of bilateral ties in diverse areas such as politics, education, and people-to-people exchanges. She expressed Vietnam’s intention to build on the existing political trust and friendship to expand economic collaborations and partnerships in science and technology, identifying opportunities where Swiss expertise aligns with Vietnam’s developmental needs.
Economic cooperation remains a cornerstone of the bilateral relationship, with trade between the two countries surpassing $2 billion annually. More than 100 Swiss companies operate in Vietnam, investing in sectors like pharmaceuticals, food processing, precision machinery, and watchmaking. This economic interdependence was noted by Swiss Senator Mauro Poggia, who recognized the significant expansion of cooperation since Vietnam embarked on its economic renewal process. He reiterated Switzerland’s support for Vietnam’s economic transformation and sustainable development.
Vietnamese Ambassador to Switzerland Châu Mai Anh highlighted the anticipated establishment of a Comprehensive Partnership by 2025 and the conclusion of negotiations on a free trade agreement with the European Free Trade Association as crucial milestones in strengthening bilateral relations.
Both nations see further potential for collaboration in areas such as innovation, digital transformation, sustainable development, finance, and human resource development, signaling a promising future for the Vietnam-Switzerland partnership.
