Thailand Cancels 60-Day Visa-Free Entry for Indian Tourists

Thailand is set to reinstate stricter visa regulations, concluding the temporary 60-day visa-free entry scheme that was advantageous for travelers from several nations, including India. This shift may influence how Indian tourists organize their visits to Thailand, a favored holiday spot in Asia. The revised policy mandates that Indian passport holders must now either secure a Visa on Arrival (VoA) upon reaching Thailand or apply for an e-Visa before their journey. The VoA permits a stay of up to 15 days per entry, a significant reduction from the previous 60-day provision.

This policy adjustment is anticipated to impact spontaneous travel and last-minute holiday plans due to the additional paperwork and visa fees involved. Despite the changes, Thailand remains an appealing destination for Indian visitors thanks to its affordability, convenient flight routes, and diverse tourist attractions. Industry analysts suggest that the new rules might particularly affect long-term visitors, digital nomads, and those planning extended, multi-city tours. As a result, some travelers seeking more extended and flexible stays may explore other Southeast Asian countries with less stringent entry requirements.

The updated regulations will take effect 15 days after they are published in the Royal Gazette, according to Thai authorities. Travelers entering Thailand before this implementation date can still enjoy the benefits of the previous rules, staying until their granted validity period ends. The temporary expansion of visa-free access was initially introduced in 2024 to rejuvenate the country’s tourism sector and bolster economic growth post-pandemic. This policy had successfully increased visitor numbers, reinforcing Thailand’s status as a top choice for leisure travel, family vacations, and special events.

Officials have linked the decision to reinforce entry protocols to concerns about visa overstays, unauthorized business activities, and the necessity for enhanced immigration monitoring. The new visa framework seeks to balance tourism development with effective border control and regulatory scrutiny. Travelers planning a trip to Thailand are advised to familiarize themselves with the latest visa requirements and entry guidelines to ensure a smooth and hassle-free travel experience.
