Thailand has inaugurated the initial 1.3-kilometer section of a permanent border fence along its boundary with Cambodia, aiming to bolster border security following last year’s hostilities between the two nations. This newly constructed barrier in Chanthaburi province features reinforced concrete panels complemented by steel mesh and concertina wire. According to Thai military officials, the design prioritizes long-term security and has been rigorously tested to endure small-arms fire.
Plans are underway to extend the fence by more than seven kilometers, connecting it to the current segment while authorities evaluate other viable locations along the 817-kilometer border shared by Thailand and Cambodia. This expansion reflects a strategic initiative to enhance border control and prevent further conflicts.
Officials emphasize that future fence construction will be guided by terrain and environmental considerations to ensure the project remains feasible and sustainable over time. This approach underscores the importance of balancing security needs with ecological impact as the project progresses.
The Thailand-Cambodia border remains heavily monitored after a series of territorial disputes led to armed clashes last year, including artillery and air strikes. These confrontations resulted in significant casualties and displaced hundreds of thousands of individuals before separate ceasefire agreements were reached to halt the violence.
