Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng and Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing convened in Hà Nội on September 5, marking Min Aung Hlaing’s inaugural visit to Vietnam in his capacity as president. The meeting centered on fortifying bilateral relations and broadening cooperation across various sectors. Hưng reiterated Vietnam’s endorsement of Myanmar’s endeavors toward achieving stability, reconciliation, dialogue, and economic progression. Meanwhile, Min Aung Hlaing lauded Vietnam’s socio-economic progress and its burgeoning influence regionally and internationally, expressing a desire to glean insights from Vietnam’s developmental trajectory. He also emphasized Myanmar’s dedication to sustaining its longstanding friendship and extensive collaboration with Vietnam.
The dialogue between the two leaders acknowledged the recent advancements in bilateral relations, with a mutual agreement to enhance high-level exchanges and foster political trust. They underscored the importance of reactivating key cooperation mechanisms that encompass trade, security, and defense sectors. It was noted that defense and security collaboration is poised to become a pivotal aspect of their relationship. Both countries aim to intensify their efforts to combat cross-border crime, cybercrime, online fraud, and drug trafficking, while also expanding military training, young officer exchanges, and cooperation on non-traditional security challenges.
Economic cooperation was another focal point of their discussions. The two sides expressed a commitment to exploring avenues to boost trade and updating existing agreements related to trade, investment, and customs. Myanmar signaled its interest in attracting Vietnamese investment in sectors such as telecommunications, digital transformation, high-tech agriculture, aquaculture, food processing, irrigation, and infrastructure.
In addition to economic ties, the leaders addressed improving infrastructure and air connectivity, with plans to restore direct flights and develop joint tourism initiatives, encompassing spiritual and medical tourism. On regional matters, Vietnam pledged to continue collaborating with ASEAN members to sustain dialogue and constructive engagement with Myanmar. Both leaders concurred on the importance of resolving disputes peacefully and in accordance with international law.
Concluding their meeting, Hưng extended an invitation to Min Aung Hlaing to participate in the CLMV Summit and preside over the ACMECS Summit in Hà Nội in November 2026. In return, the Myanmar president invited Hưng to visit Myanmar at a mutually convenient time, further cementing the diplomatic rapport between the two nations.
