WhatsApp is in the process of developing a new feature that will enable iPhone users to back up their chats, photos, videos, and documents directly to WhatsApp’s proprietary cloud storage system. This shift provides an alternative to Apple’s iCloud, which is the current default storage option for iPhone users.
The proposed feature will reportedly offer users 2GB of free cloud storage specifically for chat backups. For those requiring additional space, WhatsApp may introduce paid plans, starting with an entry-level option that includes 50GB of storage. More extensive storage plans are also believed to be in the pipeline, catering to users with larger backup needs.
This new backup option is expected to be entirely optional, allowing users to continue using iCloud as their default backup service if they choose. Additionally, those who opt for WhatsApp’s cloud service will retain the flexibility to revert to iCloud backups whenever they wish.
Security remains a priority, with the feature anticipated to include end-to-end encryption by default. This measure aims to ensure that user data remains securely protected while stored in WhatsApp’s cloud.
Currently, the feature is undergoing testing via Apple’s TestFlight platform. While there is no official timeline for when it will be available to the public, reports suggest that WhatsApp is also working on a similar cloud backup option for Android users, indicating a broader rollout in the future.
