Vietnam and Azerbaijan Discuss Expanding Strategic Partnership in Trade and Travel

During a visit to Baku on October 14, Vietnamese Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan engaged in discussions with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and First Vice President Mehriban Aliyeva to enhance the strategic partnership between Vietnam and Azerbaijan. The talks were part of Xuan’s attendance at the seventh Summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA), reflecting the commitment of both nations to deepen bilateral ties.

The discussions focused on broadening cooperation in several key areas, with a particular emphasis on economic, trade, and investment opportunities. Both countries see significant potential in sectors such as oil and gas, energy, transport, agriculture, tourism, education, science, and technology. The leaders expressed a mutual interest in exploring joint energy projects and encouraging businesses to seek out investment prospects.

To facilitate these ambitions, Vietnam and Azerbaijan agreed to strengthen high-level exchanges and improve coordination between their respective government agencies. They are also considering implementing visa exemptions for ordinary passport holders and establishing direct air routes to boost travel, tourism, and business exchanges. This move aims to simplify travel logistics and promote cultural and economic interaction between the two nations.

The two countries also focused on enhancing cooperation in culture, education, mining, and aluminum production, alongside fostering stronger people-to-people connections. Additionally, they pledged to support each other in regional and international forums, advocate for multilateralism, and uphold the principles of the United Nations Charter and international law.

These developments mark a significant step forward in the Vietnam-Azerbaijan Strategic Partnership, initially established following Vietnamese Party General Secretary To Lam’s visit to Azerbaijan in 2025. Both countries are committed to implementing existing bilateral agreements more effectively to achieve their shared goals.
