Vietnam has initiated discussions to bolster cooperation with Japan in strategic technological fields, notably in semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and renewable energy. This call for collaboration was a primary focus during a meeting on September 3 between Vietnamese science and technology officials and representatives from Japan’s House of Representatives. Key topics included semiconductor research, AI, energy technologies, and strengthening business ties in these critical tech sectors.
In line with the NEXUS joint research program, both nations are pursuing co-funded semiconductor research, which encompasses chip design, advanced materials, supporting technologies, and manufacturing processes. There is an ambition to extend this cooperation further beginning in 2027. Additionally, Vietnam has expressed a desire for Japan’s support in developing its own sovereign AI capabilities, including Vietnamese-language large language models. A joint working group from Vietnam and Japan is expected to convene in October to facilitate technology transfer and enhance business relationships within the semiconductor industry.
Vietnam has proposed expanding the NEXUS program into an annual cooperative framework, broadening the scope to include AI, new materials, renewable energy, and biomedicine. The country emphasizes the need for stronger business partnerships and enhanced training for highly skilled engineers and experts in these strategic technology fields. Japan has shown interest in Vietnam’s efforts in semiconductor development and has also taken note of Vietnam’s labor policies and long-term energy strategy, which includes plans to expand nuclear power.
As Vietnam pursues a diversified energy mix that combines conventional sources with renewables and nuclear power, it is also exploring research into small modular reactors. The nation acknowledges that this energy transition will necessitate substantial investment and a highly skilled workforce. Vietnam hopes that Japan will continue to be a pivotal partner in developing the necessary energy infrastructure to support its burgeoning high-tech industries.
