Vietnam Strengthens Strategic Cooperation with Laos, Focuses on Economic and Infrastructure Ties

Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng has emphasized the importance of strengthening strategic relations with Laos, highlighting Vietnam’s commitment to enhancing economic cooperation, infrastructure connectivity, and bilateral agreements. During a meeting in Hanoi with Vilay Lakhamfong, a senior official from the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party, Hưng underscored the need to convert high-level commitments into tangible projects that benefit both nations.

Hưng reiterated Vietnam’s support for Laos’ national development efforts and pointed to opportunities for expanded collaboration in trade, investment, defense, security, education, science, technology, and tourism. He also stressed the importance of coordination on regional and international issues through platforms such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the United Nations.

The prime minister called for the acceleration of major infrastructure projects like the Hanoi–Vientiane expressway and the Vientiane–Vung Ang railway, as well as energy connectivity initiatives. Progress on the proposed Laos–Vietnam Friendship University was also encouraged.

Both Vietnam and Laos reaffirmed their commitment to the Vietnam–Laos Cooperation Strategy for 2021–2030 and the bilateral governmental cooperation agreement for 2026–2030. The leaders highlighted the significance of regular high-level exchanges and closer coordination between ministries, local authorities, and businesses.

In preparation for 2027, marking the 65th anniversary of their diplomatic ties and the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam–Laos Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, both sides are planning activities to promote their historic relationship, particularly among younger generations.

Vilay Lakhamfong expressed gratitude for Vietnam’s assistance in Laos’ development and reaffirmed the importance of preserving the bilateral relationship. He highlighted the need for continued cooperation on regional security, stability, and economic growth.

Both countries expressed confidence that enhanced collaboration would strengthen political trust, advance shared development goals, and contribute to regional peace and stability.
