Vietnam and Laos have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, with Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng and Lao National Assembly President Sonexay Siphandone emphasizing closer cooperation during a meeting in Vientiane on October 8. The discussions highlighted the longstanding friendship and strategic partnership between the two countries, which have been marked by progress in political relations, defense, security, and trade.
The meeting, which took place during Hưng’s official visit to Laos—his first since becoming prime minister—focused on translating diplomatic understanding into tangible outcomes. Both leaders agreed on the importance of improving the business environment and addressing regulatory challenges to boost investment. They also underscored the need for stronger cooperation in education, transport, energy, culture, and people-to-people exchanges.
Prime Minister Hưng called for the Lao National Assembly’s support in mobilizing resources and enhancing the implementation of development projects, aiming to facilitate better conditions for businesses from both countries. The leaders also highlighted the significance of legislative cooperation, including delegation exchanges and sharing legislative expertise, as well as coordination in regional and international parliamentary forums.
A priority identified by the two sides was to promote people-to-people exchanges, especially among younger generations, to foster awareness of their shared history and strengthen public understanding of their friendship. Additionally, preparations for the Vietnam–Laos and Laos–Vietnam Year of Solidarity, Friendship, and Cohesion in 2027 were discussed, commemorating the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation.
Ultimately, both leaders reaffirmed the strategic importance of maintaining strong bilateral ties amid changing regional and international conditions. They pledged continued coordination on development priorities and the implementation of agreements to ensure that the partnership delivers tangible benefits for the people of Vietnam and Laos.
