Vietnam Pledges to Enhance Strategic Partnership with Russia and ASEAN

Vietnam has underscored its pivotal role in enhancing collaboration between ASEAN and Russia, following the ASEAN–Russia Commemorative Summit which celebrated 35 years of dialogue relations. The country’s Foreign Minister, Lê Hoài Trung, emphasized Vietnam’s substantial contributions to the summit’s success, highlighting its efforts to promote ASEAN’s centrality and support the deepening of the strategic partnership with Russia.

Leading the Vietnamese delegation, Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng spotlighted the importance of dialogue, cooperation, and peaceful dispute resolution, alongside respect for international law. Vietnam also advocated for the expansion of collaboration in crucial sectors such as energy, trade, transport connectivity, agriculture, and digital transformation. These discussions were pivotal in the summit adopting new frameworks to bolster ASEAN–Russia cooperation through 2030, with energy becoming a central focus of this partnership.

In a reflection of its commitment to future regional cooperation, Vietnam announced plans to host the ASEAN–Russia Young Diplomats Summit in 2027. This initiative is part of broader efforts to foster stronger ties within the region. On the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Hưng engaged in talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Both leaders reaffirmed their dedication to strengthening the Vietnam–Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, exploring avenues for expanded cooperation in fields like energy, trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, and transport.

Vietnam believes that the outcomes of the summit will significantly enhance ASEAN–Russia relations, contributing to regional stability and opening up new possibilities for economic growth and cooperation across Eurasia. By focusing on strategic partnerships and future-focused initiatives, Vietnam is solidifying its role as a key player in regional diplomacy and cooperation.
