Vietnam and the European Union are set to explore maritime economic cooperation as a potential new area of their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. This development emerged from discussions between Vietnam’s Party General Secretary and State President To Lam and European Council President António Costa during To Lam’s official visit to the EU.
The talks focused on ocean protection, maritime security, and sustainable development, underscoring a shared commitment to strengthen bilateral relations. Both leaders emphasized the importance of turning existing commitments into tangible projects that foster economic growth and improve living standards. To Lam identified the EU as a priority partner for Vietnam, advocating for enhanced trade, investment, and economic connectivity. He also urged for a greater utilization of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement to expand commercial opportunities.
In the discussions, To Lam addressed the EU’s warning about illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing and called for progress on the ratification of the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement. António Costa reaffirmed the EU’s dedication to deepening economic ties with Vietnam, highlighting initiatives such as the Global Gateway to support sustainable infrastructure investment and the energy transition. Costa also expressed readiness to expand collaboration in areas like maritime safety, cybersecurity, crisis management, and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence.
The leaders also reviewed regional and international developments, agreeing to enhance coordination through multilateral institutions. They reiterated their support for the United Nations Charter, international law, and peaceful dispute resolution. Both sides stressed the importance of maintaining peace, security, and stability in the Indo-Pacific, as well as ensuring freedom of navigation and overflight in line with international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
The EU reaffirmed its support for ASEAN centrality and emphasized Vietnam’s critical role in strengthening relations between Europe and Southeast Asia. The discussions reflect a growing momentum in Vietnam-EU relations, with both parties aiming to expand cooperation in maritime industries, sustainable investment, trade, and regional security.
