Vietnam and Norway have committed to enhancing bilateral cooperation in trade, renewable energy, and maritime development as they approach the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2026. The commitment was emphasized during a meeting in Hanoi between Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Le Thi Thu Hang and Norwegian State Secretary Astrid Bergmål, where both sides reiterated their dedication to strengthening economic and diplomatic ties.
A significant development from the discussions was the completion of negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) member states. Deputy Foreign Minister Hang urged all involved parties to expedite the ratification process and prepare for the agreement’s implementation, which is anticipated to boost market access, foster business partnerships, and provide greater certainty for investors.
The meeting also underscored the potential impact of the Green Strategic Partnership, signed in April, on sustainable development and the transition to cleaner energy. Vietnam encouraged increased investment from Norwegian businesses in sectors such as renewable energy, maritime transport, shipbuilding, port infrastructure, logistics, and high-tech aquaculture. Meanwhile, Norway expressed interest in expanding cooperation in marine management, sustainable aquaculture, green shipping, and the circular economy. Both nations aim to share technology and expertise to advance carbon neutrality and enhance energy security.
Regional cooperation was highlighted as an important agenda item, with Vietnam and Norway agreeing to collaborate closely within the ASEAN-Norway partnership from 2026 to 2030. This partnership will focus on areas such as the blue economy, energy transition, connectivity, innovation, and sustainable development. Furthermore, both countries pledged to fortify coordination between their foreign ministries and support each other in international forums, including the United Nations.
The discussions affirmed the shared commitment of Vietnam and Norway to expand economic opportunities, bolster diplomatic relations, and promote sustainable development, emphasizing the importance of free trade, international law, and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
